5.Contemporary Issues in European Integration

This course will provide an opportunity for Waseda graduate students to take an intensive course on European integration studies which is usually provided at a European university, such as the University of Oxford, the Free University of Berlin, and so on. EU Institute in Japan at Waseda University (EUIJ-Waseda) will invite one scholar from a European university for the summer intensive course.

In 2010, Dr Christian Tuschhoff, the Free University of Berlin, will come to Waseda for one week: the week commencing 23rd August. Dr Tuschhoff will provide us with four substantial days of teaching, according to the following four major subjects:
(1) EU Polity, Decision-Making, and the Impact on Member States;
(2) The Financial Crisis in the EU and Beyond;
(3) Common Foreign and Security Policy; and
(4) Globalization vs. Competition by Regions.

On each day, he will give a lecture, followed by a discussion session in a seminar format. He will send us the reading lists and the questions/titles for assignments. Students are required to prepare intensively for the summer course and to write at least four essays. This requirement will enable you to understand the four lectures given by Dr Tuschhoff, and to participate actively in the discussion of the four subjects with your own prepared essays.

Professor Nakamura will co-ordinate the course as a whole, and will provide two preparatory classes. He will utilize the Course N@vi education system, to enable any student to keep abreast of the development of this course. The official language for this course is English, but any student can communicate with Professor Nakamura in Japanese on the fringe of this course.
