Waseda University has signed exchange agreements with more than 155 institutions in 22 out of 27 EU member-states. Between 2003 and 2008, Waseda accepted an average of 13 researchers each year from EU institutions, including some institutions with which Waseda does not have exchange agreements. Naturally, Waseda provided these researchers with living accommodation and an office. Between 2003 and 2008, an average of 36 Waseda researchers have visited EU institutions each year.
In 1991, Waseda opened its 'European Centre' in Bonn to support faculty academic activity. In 2005, Waseda opened an exchange office at Sciences Po, in Paris: this office is widely used not only as a research base, but also as a base for Waseda alumni associations in Europe. Waseda also has special agreements with four European institutions: the University of Bonn, the University of Rome, the University of Paris, and Sciences Po. When we accept European researchers from these institutions, we pay them a 280,000 yen monthly stipend.
Using this network, Waseda will promote exchanges among researchers and encourage their active participation in seminars and symposia hosted in Japan.
With the formal institutionalization of the Waseda University Organisation for European Studies (WU-OES)
from April 2009,
there will be even more effective coordination of academic exchanges between Waseda and other European universities/institutes.
Waseda University has also provided an academic base for many projects, including several Global Centre of Excellence (GCOE) projects, funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education.
