EUIJ WASEDA

Waseda has signed exchange agreements with 156 institutions in 22 out of 27 EU member countries. These agreements have already allowed many of our students to study at European universities, and many European students to attend Waseda. The number of students from EU member-states who study at Waseda, as of November 2009, is as follows: 35 students from France, 33 from Germany, 23 from the UK, 16 from Sweden, 10 from Italy, 7 from Czech, 7 from Finland, 7 from Spain, 6 from the Netherlands, 5 from Hungary, 5 from Romania, 3 from Austria, 3 from Greece, 3 from Poland, 3 from Portugal, 3 from Lithuania, 2 from Estonia, 2 from Slovakia, 2 from Denmark, 2 from Bulgaria, 1 from Ireland, 1 from Slovenia, 1 from Belgium, and 1 from Latvia. These figures compare very favourably with those of other universities in Japan, but Waseda is keen to encourage still more EU students to study in Japan.

The number of Waseda students who have studied/currently study at universities in EU member-states is impressive, as the following table shows. It is realistic to expect these numbers to increase significantly following the establishment of the EUIJ Waseda. We have established an annual EU thesis contest for undergraduates, increased the number of substantial research scholarships available for masters and doctoral students of the EU, and introduced a credit-transfer system through which students who study EU-related subjects during a short and/or long stay in an EU country can apply to have their credits counted towards a certificate or a minor on their return.
