The European Union Institute in Japan at Waseda University (EUIJ Waseda), with support from the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, is engaging in educational, academic and outreach activities, to explain what the European Union is and what it does, to various sectors of Japanese society. As part of its annual work programme, the EUIJ Waseda is organizing an Essay Contest for undergraduates who are studying about the EU at Waseda University. Prizes are available to students who are able to write a high quality essay on an important issue related to the EU. Those who enter the contest are required to take note of the following points: 1. Applicant eligibility Individual or group, must be undergraduate student of Waseda University at the time of the deadline for applications. 2. Theme The essay can be written on any theme related to the EU, but must be written from an academic perspective. 3. Term and method of submission Term : Monday, 1st November 2010 ~ Tuesday, January 11th, 2011 Method: Applicants should submit entries by both post (must arrive at the below address by 11th January) and e-mail to the following addresses. By post : Bldg. 120-4, Rm 306, 513 Wasedatsurumaki-cho, Shinjuku-ku ,Tokyo 162-0041 *Please write "EUIJ essay" in red on the outside of the envelope.. By e-mail: EUIJ@list.waseda.jp *Please put the words "EUIJ essay" to the head of the mail title. 4. Guidelines and precautions ・ The essay can be written in either English (ca. 3,200 words) or Japanese (ca. 10,000 characters) including the footnotes and bibliography. ・ In each language, the applicants must provide an English title and an English abstract in ca. 250 words. ・ In terms of format, essays should be single spaced. Applicants writing in English should use Times New Roman 12. Applicants writing in Japanese should use MS Mincho 10.5. ・ All essays must be accompanied by a comprehensive bibliography and footnotes. A recognized academic referencing system should be used. ・ Applicants should use the attached coversheet. ・ The essay must be written specifically for this competition, and must not be submitted to any other essay competitions. ・ Winning essays will be published on the EUIJ at Waseda website. In this case, prize winners may be asked to further copyedit their essays to make them suitable for publication on the website. 5. The EUIJ at Waseda expects to offer several substantial prizes. ・ The winner of first prize will receive 50,000 yen. ・ There will be up to 3 supplementary awards of 30,000 yen. ・ There will be up to 6 essays which shall receive an honourable mention, and a prize of 5,000 yen. * Applicants should note that it is possible that there are no essays submitted that meet the standard required to receive a prize in some or all of the categories. 6.
