2009 EUIJ Waseda Essay Contest
The European Union Institute in Japan at Waseda University (hereafter the EUIJ Waseda), with support from the Delegation of the European Commission to Japan, is engaging in educational, academic and outreach activities, to explain what the European Union is and what it does, to various sectors of Japanese society.

Those who enter the contest are required to take note of the following points:
1. Applicants must be undergraduate students of
2. The essay can be written on any topic related to the EU, but must be written from an academic perspective. The essay must be written specifically for this competition, and must not be submitted to any other essay competitions.
3. The essay can be written in either English or Japanese. However, applicants must also provide a 250-word summary of the essay in English.
4. The essay should be approximately 3,200 words in English, or approximately 10,000 characters in Japanese, including the footnotes and bibliography. All essays must be accompanied by a comprehensive bibliography and footnotes. A recognized academic referencing system should be used.
5. In terms of format, essays should be single spaced. Applicants writing in English should use Times New Roman 12. Applicants writing in Japanese should use MS Mincho 10.5.

9. The EUIJ Waseda expects to offer several substantial prizes.
・ The essay that wins first prize will receive 50,000 yen.
・ There will be up to 3 supplementary awards of 30,000 yen.
・ There will be up to 6 essays which shall receive an honourable mention, and a prize of 5,000 yen.
* Applicants should note that it is possible that there are no essays submitted that meet the standard required to receive a prize in some or all of the categories.
10. The results of the essay contest will be announced on the EUIJ Waseda website.

*Please note that prize winners may be asked to further copyedit their essays to make them suitable for publication on the website.
