The course will explain the political, economic and legal integration of Europe and its key decision-making processes, describe and evaluate the key features of each common policy, explain how each policy works in practice, and describe the governance architecture of the EU as a whole. The EU in its "Lisbon strategy", targets the construction of a knowledge-based society, and identifies as its external goal a global governance that enables the resolution of global problems such as environmental issues, human rights protection, social security, medical security and world poverty and starvation. Students will gain a systematic understanding of the institutions of integrated Europe, and consider the implications, if any, for Japan.
