34. Regional Studies (Europe) 2

Minoru Tsubogo, Professor (Waseda University)

The present age can be described as an era of globalization and personalization. In addition, it can also be considered that globalization, regional integration, and decentralization are linked together and form a sequence. In this course, we will focus on the integration of the EU and discuss problems such as global politics, regional integration, the fate of nation-states, autonomous bodies, NGOs (civic organizations) and multinational corporations, in this era of globalization. Through this course, students will obtain a perspective for looking at politics and society in present-day Japan, and think about policies and leaders related to problem solving. In Politics and Society in the European Union II, we will discuss the political, economic, and social issues of the member countries of the EU. This year, we will focus on party politics and changes in political administrations in Europe, and take up the theme of "election politics." We will also study the theory of civic society. In particular, we will discuss the movement of European civic societies and the development of civic societies in England and Germany.
