Project 2: 'Marine biotechnology and metagenomics for environmental conservation'

Project Leader:
Haruko Takeyama, Professor of Advanced Science and Engineering, Department of Life Science and Medical Bio-Science
Counterpart:
University of Bonn, Germany

General content:
This project examines ways in which marine biotechnology and metagenomics can effectively contribute to environmental conservation. Professor Takeyama is a leading scholar in this field, and anticipates that the project has the potential to play a key role in addressing global warming and climate change. She is currently seeking research counterparts in Europe, and working within a prestigious trans-European research network entitled 'Marine Genomics Europe' (MGE). MGE serves as an interface between Life Sciences, Ecology, Environmental Studies, and Bio-Informatics. MGE is funded under the European Commission's Framework Programme (FP6) for the implementation of high-throughput genomic approaches in the biology of marine organisms. MGE will promote, develop, and spread a broad range of genomic approaches throughout the EU, to investigate a wide range of questions related to the functioning of marine ecosystems and to the biology of marine organisms.
