【Symposium 17 Oct. 2011】 Reconstruction and Fiscal Consolidation in Japan after March 11th : Lessons from European Experience

EUIJ Waseda Symposium

" Reconstruction and Fiscal Consolidation in Japan after March 11th: Lessons from European Experience "

The content of Japan's third supplementary budget for 2011 is now the subject of much debate. The Japanese government intends to allocate 13 trillion yen for the reconstruction of areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11th. It is possible that there will be increases in income tax and corporate tax, and that some state-owned property will also be sold. On the other hand, structural reforms of both the taxation and social security systems have been addressed. This symposium will be held in order to learn from the EU and its member states about their experiences of fiscal consolidation, and to promote wider and deeper discussion regarding the future of the Japanese financial system.
